each year, 'This Old House' does a project house, where someone buys a home and hires 'the guys' to do major renovations. this year the project was an italianate-style house. in fact the project is currently ongoing (pbs). so i figured i'd try one on, the box just arrived, my taxes are done, so time for a dry fit!

a few days ago while staring at everything it dawned on me that the spiral staircase had to go in when the 1st floor walls went in,
otherwise the staircase would never go in. i had hoped to put it off since i had no idea what colors to use. always nice when the light
bulb comes on in time, rare event that it is. and have now tried four different shades of the color i want for the base before
finding the right one; have more plans for the same color. so pushing on...

had some problems w/the staircase - the 1st riser wouldn't sit flush on the 1st floor. i cut back the center pole (too far) and whittled away some of the riser, which didn't help much; now the center pole doesn't touch anything and the riser still has some space between it and the floor. while i was fooling with it i glanced over at the 'frustration tank' and saw it read FULL, so at that point i flipped the 'thing' face down, squeezed both floors with one hand, applied glue to whatever with the other hand, and hoped it wouldn't pop open when i let go. so far so good, but... i realize the openness of it is attractive, but the staircase is the only thing connecting the first 2 floors at the back of the house. so if there is a problem like i had, there's nothing around to offer some help. the closest walls aren't close enough. i saw the 'ariel' has a spiral staircase but there it's surrounded by walls. here the stairs are surrounded by air. strength of construction is being sacrificed for looks imho. i'd like to see something like 2 narrow decorative spindles running from floor to ceiling, somewhere between the stairs and the arched walls, or more towards the back center. anyhow it's in.

for those of you trying this at home: when it was time to glue the exterior window frames & walls, i didn't see any obvious way to line things up, so i turned the window frame face down so the flat side faced up, applied glue around the opening, turned the wall outside face down, eyeballed the 2 openings, and pressed down. more simply, i glued the wall to the window frame rather than vice versa. then came the interior frames: they need to be oriented one way only, but now there aren't any coded tabs to tell you which is the bottom, and it matters. i lined up the cross pieces in the exterior & interior frames, and then it became obvious to the eye whether the rest of it looked right. if not, just flip the frame around. there are only 2 ways it can lay on the wall..if one doesn't look right, the other way will. capice?

Mark,
good feedback on the house. Thank you. I really like and enjoy the color selection and how you have incorporated it to the house. Keep up the great work and informative information.

i just realized the mistake i made w/the staircase -- first i glued the top stair to the underside of the 2nd floor, which left no play in the bottom. i also used the very fast drying glue, which left no time for adjustment. both top & bottom should be glued at the same time, w/a slower-drying glue duh. i still feel there needs to be more support in that area; the underside of one riser isn't enough imo.

I love this dramatic look of you house Mark. I finished Greenleafs Orchid and today started off with Luann. Will post pictures of the beginning just now.
